When What You’re Chasing Is Keeping You From What You Want Most
Success is a mirage.
You look at it longingly from a distance, and it looks like everything you want.
Luscious shade.
Overflowing streams.
A place to rest and reap the reward from your weary travels.
The beauty and allure of the destination makes being on this path worth it.
And is only accessible to the select few who persevere…
So even when things feel hard, you keep going, to prove you have what it takes…
to rest and reap your just reward.
In that way, success is a great motivator.
Until you get closer.
And then you realize there are no palm trees.
There is no glorious waterfall spilling over into a pool.
The respite that kept you going, the place where you expected to rest was an illusion.
A glorious story, woven together by those who hadn’t realized success themselves but believed wholeheartedly in its magical existence.
The first time it happened, you were disheartened a little, but then you met others along the way who, too, were in pursuit of success. Surely, it must exist. So you kept going, kept climbing, and then there it was again. You looked ahead, squinted a little, and you could see the promise of your long-sought destination in the distance.
So you pressed on.
Willing yourself there.
But then it happened again.
And again.
Pursuing success is like that.
Trying to get some place that doesn’t exist instead of being fully present to where we are.
Trying to get there keeps us from being here.
It keeps us from being, valuing, paying attention to who and where we are now.
And isn’t that the point?
For us to be here?
For us to be and bring our whole selves to this moment?
This moment is where the magic is happening.
This moment is where the connections are being made.
Life is happening here.
Now.
So much of the discontentment we feel comes from concerning ourselves so much with being there that we neglect being here. We focus so much on striving and arriving that we miss the magic of being, of presence.
Your life is the journey.
There is no end except at the end.
So if you weren’t trying to get there…
If here was the prize…
How would you be here?
How would you spend your time?
How would you delight in this life? This moment?
How would you make sure that you arrive at the end not longing for all the things you didn’t do but grateful and deliciously spent from all that you did?
The magic you've been seeking isn't waiting for you at some distant destination. It's available to you right here, right now—but only when you stop running toward mirages long enough to see it.
